Since being designated a City of Design by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and selected as
the World Design Capital in 2010, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has successfully
hosted numerous major design events. Beyond that, it has actively leveraged design to address
social issues and contribute to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs).

In line with these efforts, the SMG and Seoul Design Foundation has been hosting the Seoul
Design Award, an international award now in its sixth edition, since 2019. It recognizes designers
who use creativity to tackle everyday challenges and foster harmonious, sustainable relationships
between people, society, and the environment.

Each year, designers from over 80 countries, aiming to drive social change through design, submit
their work to the Seoul Design Award. A panel of 32 design leaders from more than 20 countries
serves as juries, providing valuable feedback. Acknowledged by international design experts, the Seoul Design Award is the world’s only design award dedicated to sustainable daily life.

COMPETITION PURPOSE

The Forests Stretch from Horizon to Horizon Across the Verdant Expanse of Kočevska…

With over 80% forest coverage, it is almost surprising that wood, this priceless natural resource, was once well-utilised but has been so underused in recent decades.

Global and local circumstances in the past decades nearly erased the value of wood and the importance of local forest-wood chains. This neglect led to a steep decline in the wood processing industry across Slovenia, and consequently, to fewer enrolments in vocational secondary programs focused on woodworking.

We found ourselves in a situation where we could only helplessly watch raw logs leave our forests and cross our national borders, unprocessed.

Climate change and the crisis of globalisation have brought us back to the idea that wood is an excellent raw material—but it must be used differently: enriched with new knowledge and design, crafted using modern technology in harmony with the refined skills of traditional craftsmen.

It is no surprise, then, that wood is becoming one of the key materials in the green transition.

In 2013, as a response to this situation, the Kočevje Grammar and Secondary School launched the initiative for the Festival of Wood, with strong support from the Municipality of Kočevje.

We aimed to create a platform for reflecting on the opportunities offered by our forested region. We wanted to remind the local population of the value of wood as a natural asset—something that should not be taken for granted, even if it often is—and hoped to raise awareness of the high-quality natural environment we live in.

We wanted to connect with local entrepreneurs, as well as scientists in Slovenia and abroad. In short, our goal was to raise awareness and transform our attitude toward forests and wood—something we can be truly proud of.

This new awareness naturally brings with it the knowledge and skills to process wood and, ultimately, to sell it successfully with as much added value as possible.

The Festival of Wood is announcing the international (Prime)Chair design competition. A professional jury will select two design solutions, which will be presented as prototypes at the 2025 Festival of Wood Awards Ceremony.

Alongside each first prize, the jury will also choose two honourable mentions in each category, which will be showcased visually at the opening event.

The competition is open to creative and imaginative individuals aged 18 and above.

When we think of Kočevska, a picture of a magnificent forest landscape comes to mind—untouched nature, rich in wildlife, where the bear, wolf, and lynx reign supreme.

But Kočevska is more than that. It holds a special secret: its seemingly endless forests jealously guard their exceptionally valuable treasures. These silent and mysterious corners of ancient nature are among the few remaining virgin forests in Europe.

Slovenia has 14 virgin forests, and nearly half of them are in Kočevska. This region’s forest heritage includes six virgin forests, covering a total area of nearly 219 hectares. The largest among them, Krokar, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.

Organised by Fingertips Company Limited and sponsored by Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI), the “Art on Climate” International Illustration Competition aims to raise awareness of effective strategies for combating climate change.

Launched in Spain in 2019, the “Art on Climate” competition has grown into a global movement over the past six years. What began as a regional initiative now attracts thousands of artists worldwide, with the 2024 competition receiving over 3,000 artworks from over 2,400 illustrators in more than 100 locations. This year, the Competition continues its mission across the Asia-Pacific region, uniting professional artists and emerging talents to harness creativity in raising climate awareness and driving action.

With more than 20 years of leadership in sustainable investing, AllianzGI has placed sustainability at the heart of our mission and investment decisions. As one of the first 50 asset managers to sign the UN Principles for Responsible Investing (UN PRI) in 2007, we have deeply integrated sustainability into every facet of our business, from investments and active stewardship to operations. Through this commitment, we aim to create positive impact in the financial industry while generating enduring value for our clients and the wider community. We cordially invite everyone to join us in the “Art on Climate” competition to collaboratively shape a sustainable future.

Theme of the Competition: Climate Change
Participants are invited to submit original works on the theme of “climate change”. Participants should draw inspiration from one or more of the following topics as a starting point of their artworks:

Statements:

1. Empowering Communities for Climate Resilience
Climate change, one of the most critical challenges facing our planet, brings profound impacts across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions. To navigate its escalating risks, it is crucial to develop resilient communities capable of adapting to immediate threats. This approach also equips us to address the broader uncertainties, ensuring a sustainable future amidst a changing climate.

2. Establishing Planetary Boundaries for Sustainable Living
To safeguard the stability and health of our planet, we must identify the environmental limits within which humanity can safely operate, ensuring minimal impact on biodiversity. Respecting these boundaries enables us to act responsibly, mitigating irreversible harm to ecosystems and avoiding unintended consequences in our efforts to combat climate change.

3. Advancing Inclusive Capitalism for a Sustainable Future
Inclusive capitalism aims to build a just and sustainable society by balancing financial returns with social impact, encouraging businesses and investors to focus on long-term value creation, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. As inclusion emerges as a critical focus following climate change, this approach demands innovative solutions to meet the expectations of younger generations.

4. Leveraging Technology for Innovative Sustainability Solutions
Advanced technology serves as a key driver in promoting sustainability and tackling the pressing challenges of climate change. By harnessing technological innovation, we can encourage proactive changes in daily practices, inspiring others to contribute to a more sustainable future.

5. Uniting for Collective Action to Tackle Climate Change
