Introducing the Kinderspace: Architecture for Children’s Development competition / Edition #3, an architectural challenge dedicated to crafting innovative educational spaces that enhance early childhood learning. As young children navigate their formative years, the environment in which they learn plays a pivotal role in their cognitive, emotional, and social development. Traditional educational settings often do not fully cater to the dynamism of early childhood, potentially stifling creativity and exploration.

This competition seeks to transform kindergarten design by creating environments that are not only safe and functional but also stimulating and inclusive. Participants are encouraged to conceive spaces that foster learning, creativity, and community interaction, using sustainable and innovative design solutions that promote healthy development.

With the flexibility to select a site within their home country, participants have the unique opportunity to integrate their designs within diverse community settings, potentially revitalizing underutilized areas. The Kinderspace #3 competition is more than just designing educational facilities; it’s about enriching communities and enhancing the educational landscapes to nurture the youngest members of our society. Participants are invited to think beyond conventional boundaries and develop spaces that inspire, educate, and connect.

Introducing the fifth edition of the Hospice – Home for the Terminally Ill Competition, an evolving architectural ideas contest dedicated to crafting sanctuaries for those grappling with terminal illnesses.

Building on the success and insights gained from previous challenges, this year’s competition continues to delve into the critical need for spaces that extend beyond medical treatment. The earlier editions unveiled inspiring designs that recognized the intricate interplay of emotional, psychological, and physical needs in end-of-life care. This new edition seeks to further this exploration, encouraging architects to innovate and refine their approaches in creating environments that offer comfort, dignity, and a sense of community to those facing life-threatening illnesses.

Participants are tasked with conceiving a facility that not only provides medical support but also caters to the psychological and emotional well-being of its visitors. The design should comfortably host up to 15 visitors and 5 staff members, featuring essential spaces such as a common area with a library, a gathering room, a chapel, a kitchen, a dining room, a nurse’s room, and a therapy room for psychological support.

In this fifth edition, we continue to provide participants with the freedom to select a theoretical site within their own country, encouraging them to incorporate cultural, environmental, and social contexts into their designs. This competition extends beyond architectural aesthetics; it serves as an opportunity for participants to showcase how thoughtful design can provide solace and support to individuals facing the most challenging phases of their lives.

COMPETITION PURPOSE

The Forests Stretch from Horizon to Horizon Across the Verdant Expanse of Kočevska…

With over 80% forest coverage, it is almost surprising that wood, this priceless natural resource, was once well-utilised but has been so underused in recent decades.

Global and local circumstances in the past decades nearly erased the value of wood and the importance of local forest-wood chains. This neglect led to a steep decline in the wood processing industry across Slovenia, and consequently, to fewer enrolments in vocational secondary programs focused on woodworking.

We found ourselves in a situation where we could only helplessly watch raw logs leave our forests and cross our national borders, unprocessed.

Climate change and the crisis of globalisation have brought us back to the idea that wood is an excellent raw material—but it must be used differently: enriched with new knowledge and design, crafted using modern technology in harmony with the refined skills of traditional craftsmen.

It is no surprise, then, that wood is becoming one of the key materials in the green transition.

In 2013, as a response to this situation, the Kočevje Grammar and Secondary School launched the initiative for the Festival of Wood, with strong support from the Municipality of Kočevje.

We aimed to create a platform for reflecting on the opportunities offered by our forested region. We wanted to remind the local population of the value of wood as a natural asset—something that should not be taken for granted, even if it often is—and hoped to raise awareness of the high-quality natural environment we live in.

We wanted to connect with local entrepreneurs, as well as scientists in Slovenia and abroad. In short, our goal was to raise awareness and transform our attitude toward forests and wood—something we can be truly proud of.

This new awareness naturally brings with it the knowledge and skills to process wood and, ultimately, to sell it successfully with as much added value as possible.

The Festival of Wood is announcing the international (Prime)Chair design competition. A professional jury will select two design solutions, which will be presented as prototypes at the 2025 Festival of Wood Awards Ceremony.

Alongside each first prize, the jury will also choose two honourable mentions in each category, which will be showcased visually at the opening event.

The competition is open to creative and imaginative individuals aged 18 and above.

When we think of Kočevska, a picture of a magnificent forest landscape comes to mind—untouched nature, rich in wildlife, where the bear, wolf, and lynx reign supreme.

But Kočevska is more than that. It holds a special secret: its seemingly endless forests jealously guard their exceptionally valuable treasures. These silent and mysterious corners of ancient nature are among the few remaining virgin forests in Europe.

Slovenia has 14 virgin forests, and nearly half of them are in Kočevska. This region’s forest heritage includes six virgin forests, covering a total area of nearly 219 hectares. The largest among them, Krokar, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.

The post Concrete Pavilion appeared first on designboom | architecture & design magazine.

]]>
Concrete is one of the most ubiquitous materials in the built environment. Its legacy spans centuries, from the enduring marvels of ancient Rome to the modern monoliths of contemporary architecture. But beyond its familiar gray tones and formidable strength lies a world of design potential, yet to be fully unlocked. With this competition, Buildner invites architects and designers to rediscover concrete—not just as a structural solution, but as a medium for innovation, expression, and experimentation.

This edition of Buildner’s Material Studies series challenges participants to design a Concrete Pavilion, a space that not only showcases the versatility and raw beauty of concrete, but also educates the public about its evolving applications. The pavilion should be designed as either a temporary or permanent structure, with a total area not exceeding 50 m². Participants are free to choose the site location, but are encouraged to consider contexts where the pavilion could generate a meaningful dialogue between material and place.
The design must explore the sensory and tactile qualities of concrete: its textures, colors, finishes, and forms. Whether through cast-in-place elements, precast modules, or even experimental mixes with additives and aggregates, participants should stretch the limits of what concrete can do. The pavilion should serve as both a functional exhibition space and a sculptural object—one that sparks curiosity, provokes thought, and invites interaction.

Sustainability and innovation are key. While concrete has often been criticized for its environmental impact, recent advances offer pathways toward low-carbon and even carbon-neutral formulations. Participants are encouraged to incorporate sustainable strategies—through materials, methods, or messaging—into their proposals. The goal is not only to build with concrete, but to build better with it.

Terraviva launches BODEGAS VINIVAL, a new architecture competition inviting participants to reimagine an iconic industrial space as a dynamic cultural hub dedicated to the spirit of Las Fallas de Valencia.

Prizes up to 10.000 € will be awarded to the winners selected by an international jury panel composed, among others, by Luciano Crespi (Politecnico di Milano), Elisa Battilani (Cream Estudio), Nuria Matarredona Desantes (Universitat Politècnica de València), and Jose Luis Perez Hermo (Coop Himmelb(l)au).

BRIEF

The competition invites a transformative design that revitalizes the Antiguas Bodegas Vinival, a mid-20th-century wine production complex, into a vibrant space for community, culture, and creativity. Participants are encouraged to celebrate the memory of the building while embodying the energy, irreverence, and ritual of Las Fallas – Valencia’s iconic festival of fire and renewal.

Designers are asked to preserve the structural skeleton of the Bodegas and reimagine its vast interiors and surrounding landscape through adaptive reuse strategies. The goal is to propose a flexible cultural centre that functions year-round, hosting exhibitions, workshops, performances, and public gatherings both indoors and outdoors.

Proposals should merge tradition with innovation and define a space capable of honouring the legacy of Las Fallas while fostering new cultural expressions.

PRIZES

• 1st Prize: 5.000€
• 2nd Prize: 2.000€
• 3rd Prize: 1.000€
• 5 Golden Mentions: coupon for a free membership
• 10 Honorable Mentions: a coupon for a free competition
• 30 Finalists: published on Terraviva channels

GUIDELINES

Designs must preserve the Bodega’s main structural frame, but participants are free to remove or reinterpret all internal installations. The surrounding area, soon to be cleared, offers fertile ground for new urban and landscape interventions. Interior spaces should be reconfigured for maximum flexibility using modular or retractable elements, while the exteriors should promote connectivity, inclusion, and usability in Valencia’s Mediterranean climate.

Respecting these boundaries enables us to act responsibly, mitigating irreversible harm to ecosystems and avoiding unintended consequences in our efforts to combat climate change.

3. Advancing Inclusive Capitalism for a Sustainable Future
Inclusive capitalism aims to build a just and sustainable society by balancing financial returns with social impact, encouraging businesses and investors to focus on long-term value creation, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. As inclusion emerges as a critical focus following climate change, this approach demands innovative solutions to meet the expectations of younger generations.

4. Leveraging Technology for Innovative Sustainability Solutions
Advanced technology serves as a key driver in promoting sustainability and tackling the pressing challenges of climate change. By harnessing technological innovation, we can encourage proactive changes in daily practices, inspiring others to contribute to a more sustainable future.

5. Uniting for Collective Action to Tackle Climate Change

KOKUYO and VUILD are hosting an international design competition exploring the boundaries of architecture and furniture through digital fabrication.
Timed to coincide with the 2025 Venice Biennale, the competition seeks innovative ideas from talented architects and creative practitioners worldwide, aiming to explore a new future shaped by digital fabrication.
The Grand Prize-winning design will be fabricated during the Biennale period and exhibited both at the European Cultural Centre – Palazzo Mora and at THE CAMPUS—KOKUYO’s “open to the public” workplace in Tokyo.

(1) Theme:「Personal and Public」

The things we see. The warmth of sunlight, the chill of wind we feel. The beings we share space with. The objects we encounter.
The self is not fixed, but continuously woven through these shifting entanglements.
Personal is where we can fully inhabit and savor that entangled self.
Public is where new responses and relationships emerge, woven with others.
What kind of design can give form to a space that allows one to be alone, while holding the possibility of connection?
We invite proposals that explore the in-between where the Personal and the Public come into being together.

(2) Eligible Entries

Designs intended for installation in public spaces that bridge the realms of architecture and furniture.
We seek design proposals that shape spaces like architecture and attend to human gestures and sensations like furniture.

It may not be your first instinct when entering a building to consider how it makes you feel, but architecture has always had a big impact on emotions. Different spaces are designed to make their inhabitants feel different things; offices can make you feel energised and productive, art galleries can make you feel thoughtful and curious, and museums can make you feel calm and intrigued. Each of these spaces is completely different from each other and is far more than just a building.

As part of a series of annual architecture competitions, the Museum of Emotions competition is tasking participants with using architecture as a tool to bring out different emotions. They are asked to design a museum that includes two separate exhibition halls that bring out contrasting emotions – one inducing negative emotions, and the other inducing positive emotions.

Participants are free to choose the specific emotions they incite with their designs – fear, anger, anxiety, love, happiness, laughter, etc. The purpose of the Museum of Emotions is to use architecture as the primary tool to create emotional states, through consideration of the scales of the spaces, the journey through the space, colour, lighting, and material choice. As this is an ideas competition, participants are free to choose any site location, real or imaginary, as well as the size of their structure.

Museum of Emotions / Edition #7 is one of Buildners’ silent competitions, in which participants must communicate their ideas without the use of any text. The design concept and thinking behind it must all be communicated solely through the use of visuals.
