VONDOM PRESENTS MADISON COLLECTION DESIGNED BY EUGENI QUITLLET

Vondom’s Madison collection, designed by Eugeni Quitllet, draws inspiration from the dynamic and evolving character of New York. Reflecting the city’s vital attitude, a place where deep-rooted traditions mingle with the modern pulse, the collection integrates this duality directly into its design, offering a versatile range of chairs. It embodies a ‘changing spirit’ that combines modern aesthetics with classic lines, all stemming from a singular structure capable of manifesting four distinct personalities. This adaptability, according to designer Eugeni Quitllet, captures the very essence of his vision:

‘The essence of a Manhattan street that still retains its energy and has been able to adapt to the passage of time to remain a reference of both architectural style and the New Yorker way of living… I wanted my Madison chair to reflect this changing spirit, modern and classic at the same time and to offer all the possibilities of use with its multiple finishes, noble and hospitality. A design for everyone, from New York City!’ says Quitllet, elaborating on his inspiration behind the Madison collection.

MADISON DEEPENS COMPLICITY BETWEEN VONDOM AND QUITLLET

After several collections, including furniture lines like Ibiza, Africa and Tulum, Madison further deepens the strong and creative complicity between Vondom and Eugeni Quitllet. With roots in Valencia, the Spanish brand has long been known for its mission to create outdoor furniture, characterized by distinctive forms and refined materials. Quitllet, a Catalan designer, approaches design with a unique vocabulary, often unveiling inherent shapes from within the material.

Madison stands as a testament to Vondom and Eugeni Quitllet’s creative complicity

ONE DESIGN BLOSSOMS INTO FOUR DISTINCT LOOKS

At the heart of the Madison collection lies a singular core structure, yet it blossoms into four distinct personalities through an array of different compositions, mixing materials and finishes. Each version is crafted to evoke a specific mood and aesthetic. One iteration stands out with its resin slats, offering a contemporary appeal that defines a clean, structural aesthetic. Another design radiates unburdened lightness, distinguished by its airy appearance. For those seeking a cozier embrace, there’s a more enveloping, tactile option, providing a soft touch. Finally, the last version evokes the warmth and aesthetic of wood, adding a natural and inviting element. All these variations share a wide chromatic range, ensuring effortless adaptation to both indoor and outdoor spaces.

vondom reveals africa sofa designed by eugeni quitllet

Vondom and Eugeni Quitllet return to elemental design, expanding the Africa collection with a generously proportioned sofa that doesn’t demand attention. It simply exists with quiet confidence, as if it had always belonged. Designed to cradle both body and space, the Africa sofa carries the ease of simplicity and the depth of an object shaped by time. Outdoor living, in this context, becomes something softer, more reflective, and more enduring.

africa sofa expands the collection with sustainable comfort

Founded with a mission to create bold and intelligent outdoor furniture, Vondom is no stranger to sculptural design that dares to defy conventional expectations. With roots in Valencia, the company has developed a distinctive language, one that favors bold silhouettes, refined materials, and a conscious approach to outdoor living. In collaboration with Catalan designer Eugeni Quitllet, Vondom has cultivated a body of work that is both future-facing and deeply grounded in timeless forms. The Africa collection, born from their first chair together, remains a central thread in this shared story.

What started as a simple armless chair has grown into a lineage: barstools, loungers, cushioned dining seats—and now, the Africa sofa. Offered in two- and three-seater configurations, the piece translates the clean silhouette of the original chair into a plush, lounge-worthy form. It’s a natural evolution, not just in function but in spirit—one that invites you to sit longer, share more, and still feel the quiet elegance of minimalist design.

how do you simplify without compromising?

Each new Africa creation begins with a question: how do you simplify without compromising? The answer is found in the use of monobloc injection molding, allowing Vondom to achieve optimal ergonomics, lightweight durability, and stackability—all wrapped in a silhouette that feels almost effortless. The sofa continues this approach, bringing the brand’s indoor-level comfort to the outdoors, with high-quality upholstery that resists the elements yet remains soft to the touch.

There’s a sense of fashion here too, not in the fleeting, trend-chasing sense, but in the way each sofa is ‘dressed’ for occasion. Its upholstered finish, available in a range of textiles, lets it adapt to changing tastes and moods without losing the identity of the collection, giving its modular minimalism a tailored twist.

the sofa brings the brand’s indoor-level comfort to the outdoors with high-quality upholstery

But beyond the aesthetics and engineering lies a deeper intention: longevity. For Quitllet, true beauty is in endurance. A product should weather storms, saltwater splashes, and sun-soaked summers without losing grace. It’s sustainability not as a buzzword, but as a design philosophy – a product you can live with, and live in, for a lifetime.

The Africa sofa doesn’t just extend a collection – it continues a conversation between designer and material, between brand and lifestyle, between past and future. And in that dialogue, Vondom reminds us that design is not always about creating something new; sometimes, it’s about perfecting the essence of what already works.

pedrali presents its new collections at MDW 2022

Pedrali presents its 2022 collections offering the coziest comfort to enjoy the Mediterranean breeze, a longing sunset during the warm season or a relaxing winter afternoon at home, all thanks to the fluidity of the brand’s shapes. From Patrick Jouin to Eugeni Quitllet and Sebastian Herkner, elegance is elevated to meet the horizons. The Italian leading manufacturer of contemporary design furniture presented its new collections at the 2022 Salone del Mobile in Milan through the strong architectural appeal of the exhibited stand. We display below the complete set of families to celebrate the delicate details and finesse of Pedrali.

From an urban interior setting to a Mediterranean terrace

In its 33rd participation at the world’s most important international design event, Pedrali reveals twelve new collections, resulting from meticulous research and collaborations with Italian and international designers. In a 800 sqm setting designed by studio Calvi Brambilla, the volume stylized in archetypal columns and terracotta-colored bands reminisce the brand’s graphical communication. Each of the five areas is characterized by windows painted in gradients that look over the horizon. The different hues portray times of day, conveying the sense that the furniture can accompany the user at any moment. From a contemporary urban interior setting to a Mediterranean terrace and a garden, the 2022 Milan Design Week layout is enriched with colors.

The first room features a contemporary urban interior evoking the elegance of the Blume collection by Sebastian Herkner. The chairs and armchairs, also available in a lounge version, feature a sophisticated flower-shaped profile in extruded aluminum and a soft, generous polyurethane foam padding. On the occasion of Salone del Mobile, the German designer enriches the collection with a new family: the Blume System module. Echoing the similarly flowery silhouette in aluminum, the products create a variety of configurations; from a two-level bedside table, to a three- or four-level shelving system.

The Lamorisse seating collection by CMP Design takes center stage in the second setting of #pedralinewhorizons, reproducing a Mediterranean terrace with a romantic, relaxed atmosphere. The product’s aluminum structure makes it ideal for a waterfront veranda, shaded outdoor areas, for a poolside table, or even on a ship deck. Its lightweight structure in extruded aluminum and oval legs holds a large and enveloping cushion. Moreover, the seat is supported by elastic belts that offer maximum comfort and strength. In the examples above, the Lamorisse armchairs are arranged around the Toa table designed by Robin Rizzini, in its outdoor version. Lightweight and minimalist, it is characterized by a solid die-cast aluminum frame and a top suitable for outdoor use.

Next on the exhibition route is a large elevated space decked out as a lush garden. With its rich vegetation, this area allows the visitor to wander in an alternative, almost enchanted dimension. The sky in the background creates a sense of depth and a potentially infinite horizon, while the almost magical presence of a red house at the center clearly references the brand’s outdoor advertising campaign of the last two years.

The Babila Twist, designed by Odo Fioravanti, emphasizes the specific use of cord. The steel armchair is characterized by a large and welcoming shell woven with a flat rope in polypropylene that wraps around the armrests, creating also a play of light and shadow on the backrest. Combined with the body, the tubular steel frame shapes the slats of the seat as well; these are screwed, making them easy to disassemble and recycle.

Outdoor lounge seating system Arki-Sofa encapsulates the comfort of an indoor sofa. Sofa and armchair echo the extruded aluminum frame and the linear, rigorous shapes of the Arki collection, first launched ten years ago. Its geometrically shaped and generously thick cushions rest on a light structure supported by elastic belts. For extra comfort, the polyurethane foam padding with waterproof lining is covered in outdoor fabric guarantees excellent performances in the open air. Along with the product’s linear modules and chaise longues, multiple compositions can be created to meet the needs of space and personalization.

A piece of furniture whose very name evokes a relaxing ambience is the Reva Cocoon, by Patrick Jouin. The system of lounge seats are made up of linear and corner elements featuring striking backrests in stainless steel woven with rope. The feeling of envelopment is enhanced by the soft cushions that rest on the structure that are available in rectangular, square and round forms. With its generous volumes and high backrests, Reva Cocoon creates a space within the space, offering protection and shelter, while keeping the piece of furniture airy and bright using a thicker weave in the lower part and a looser one in the upper section.

Overlooking the terrace of Pedrali’s iconic red house is Souvenir by Eugeni Quitllet. Available in chair or armchair version, the monoblock design is made of polypropylene adjusted specifically for outdoor use. The soft shapes and three-dimensional slats make Souvenir particularly comfortable as its legs widen towards the bottom and merge with the characteristic small foot. In line with the brand’s quest for environmental sustainability, the product also comes in a ‘recycled grey’ version: 50% from plastic material post-consumer waste and 50% from plastic material industrial waste.

To enjoy moments of conviviality and relax in the open air, CMP Design presents Nolita sofa. A piece of furniture that confirms its summery character featuring simple and iconic shapes. Its steel tube structure provides a visual rhythm to ensure the greatest strength and durability. By recalling the origins of a historic course started by Mario Pedrali in 1963 with his first metal garden chairs, the Nolita sofa keeps the collection’s distinctive features of transparency and lightness. Linear or angular with a right or left armrest, the brand’s versatility is consistently apparent.

Always by CMP Design, the Panarea barstool broadens the successful collection of the same name featuring a wide and curved backrest woven in polypropylene cord. This use of cord emphasizes the stool’s elegant appearance and optimizes the weave, resulting in a double curvature that gives three-dimensionality and graphic rigor. Over the seat leans a comfortable cushion covered in fabric made from the same yarn used for the woven element.

Characterized by neutral tones and a midnight blue-colored wall, a new space dedicated to hospitality appears along the route. The Héra Lounge armchair, by Patrick Jouin, echoes the silhouette of the armchair designed in 2019, embodying the concept of lightness fusing it with that of comfort and elegance. Made of ash wood, its backrest in curved solid wood is defined by an enveloping and sculptural band ends in rectangular legs.

The lounge area is defined by the strong and modern personality of Jeff, the 2022 modular sofa system designed by Patrick Norguet. Designed as a set of miniature architectures, Jeff is combined to create multiple scenarios whether linear, corner elements, with or without armrests, allowing configurations from the most classic corner solutions to the most modern island set-ups. Each module is made from a non-deformable polyurethane foam, resting on a plywood platform covered in fabric, offering the organically-shaped seat a subtle contrast with the more strict shapes of the backrest and armrests.

In this context, Hevea by Victoria Azadinho Bocconi is presented. The collaboration with the Italian-Brazilian designer brings nature indoors. The versatile pot-holder consists of a central steel stem, which allows for different reconfigurations, making it possible to arrange plants vertically. The collection also consists of Hevea Partition, the three-column holder that creates green walls in work and hospitality spaces, and Hevea Ice Bucket.

The same scene also features Patrick Jouin’s Ila armchair. The smooth, taut exterior in rigid polyurethane almost cocoons the user in its large volumes, allowing a moment of relaxation and escape from everyday life. This sense of protection is augmented by the inner side of the backrest and seat in flexible polyurethane foam, which adapts to the human body and envelops it just like a soft embrace.

Pedrali debuts souvenir at salone del mobile 2022

Eugeni Quitllet continues to fuse the past and future in his designs with Pedrali, following the Remind and Soul collections. The latest seating collection between the Catalan designer and Italian furniture brand, called Souvenir, debuted at Salone del Mobile 2022. Its harmonious, sensuous sculpture appears elegant and modern whilst also evoking a sense of memory for onlookers and sitters.

Pedrali and I have found a natural harmony to work together over the years. Our story is growing well. It is important to feel very comfortable in these relationships as a designer is never alone. I can only share my dream with Pedrali and with the user,’ begins Eugeni Quitllet in an interview with designboom at Salone del Mobile 2022. ‘We have been working on the Souvenir for one year and a half in the shadows and now it is in the sun. The object has become real in the eyes of the people.

The sensual shape recalls the emotion of memories for onlookers and sitters

eugeni quitllet reinterpreted the iconic parisian garden chairs

When I am designing, I think every product must tell a story and make the users part of this tale. Souvenir captures this exactly. It recalls a memory of the industrial revolution from the early 19th century, when metal tubes were being shaped as outdoor chairs for parks and gardens. I reinterpreted this story for the modern day using technology. The design has a fluid harmony, sensitive shape and sensuality. The chair reminds us of a souvenir: the beautiful vacations, a garden in Paris, and a time, place and people. It has a beautiful emotion,’ explains Eugeni.

The Pedrali Souvenir reinterprets Parisian icons – the classic green chairs of the Jardin des Tuileries or the Jardin du Luxembourg. These designs helped create places renowned for tranquillity, serenity and a sense of escapism in an urban setting since as early as 18th century. The new chair and armchair evoke similar memories that, as its name suggests, recall moments in treasured places with loved ones.

Like in the gardens of Paris, the Souvenir can be moved at preference anywhere outdoors, whether in a park, terrace or open-air cafe. The chairs are very light, stackable yet extremely resistant. Its sculptural shape fits any space, pairing well with different environments and weather conditions. This is all whilst being comfortable and aiding well-being.

The idea is that the user can be transported anywhere with this product.’ The designer continues to add, ‘it evokes the same memories as if a picture, sculpture or artwork does, but instead it is a very useful product, which can be stacked, used outside in the rain or sun. Its sculptural nature means it looks great in all weathers, as the surroundings add to its personality.

It reinterprets the iconic Parisian garden chairs using new materials

polypropylene or recycled polypropylene

The Souvenir echoes a similar shape to the Parisian icons, reinterpreting them through the use of a new material: polypropylene or recycled polypropylene. This allows all elements of the softly-shaped design to be integrated organically as a monoblock. Three-dimensional slats form the back and seat, and the legs widens naturally towards its attractive, small feet.

I like to work with Pedrali as they are a company that plays with many different materials, which then gives me much more tools to imagine different projects. I normally like to stay with plastic as it is the material closer to technology. For me, plastic is the skin of my ideas; I can mold it to express my shapes. It is the only material that can follow all its functions in one single piece,’ clarifies Eugeni.

My long collaboration with Pedrali means we can explore, research and realize products with recycled materials. The ‘recycled grey’ material showcases the benefits of recycling in a tangible way, as the users feel part of the circular process. If we discard a plastic product correctly, it can be reused in another project like the Souvenir chair. Sustainability is not only the responsibility of the designer and producer; the user needs to use it correctly, look after it, clean it, and at the end of its life cycle, dispose of it in a conscious way,’ notes the designer.

The collection is aligned to the Italian furniture manufacturer’s ambition for environmental sustainability. Following the Remind and Babila XL, the Souvenir is also available in a ‘recycled grey’ material made from reused polypropylene: 50% from plastic material post-consumer waste and 50% plastic material industrial waste. It stands out in its grey tones whereas the standard version can be dressed in white, black, green, pink, red or grey.

The stackable designs can be dressed in white, black, green, pink, red or grey, or as ‘recycled grey’

This chair is the beginning of another story with Pedrali. The Souvenir will bring even more excitement. We can extend it with new sizes, functions and to fit different environments,’ concludes Eugeni Quitllet in an interview with designboom.

using precise engineering and fine italian craftsmanship, the blume collection by sebastian herkner for pedrali grows. first debuted in 2020, the distinctive flower-shaped extruded frames transform into even more elegant lounge and armchair versions. the german designer’s products exuberate sophistication merged with cutting-edge technology as the aluminum seamlessly curves around the seat and backrest. marked by clean lines, the refined chairs become ideal for relaxing living rooms as well as restaurant and lounge settings, allowing the user’s well-being to take center stage. along with the special edition of blume, pedrali opens a cabinet of curiosities to welcome visitors at salone del mobile 2021. the architectural timeline categorizes the history of the 100% made in italy brand as well as featuring timeless furniture pieces. this includes various collections like patrick jouin’s expansion of ila as well as works by eugeni quitllet and odo fioravanti.

ahead of the debut, designer sebastian herkner gives designboom exclusive insight into the blossoming on the blume collection.

‘they are really into the idea of exploring and investing in new products, machines and new technologies, and it is with that mindset that I had the idea to do something different,’  says sebastian herkner as he describes his collaboration with monica and giuseppe pedrali. evident in blume, or flower in english, the furniture brand showcases once more a strong stance to experiment with the traditional and unconventional.

‘usually, designers take a metal tube of different diameters that they find in the warehouse and that’s it. what I wanted to do, though, was take an overlooked, normal element like the legs and turn them into a very aesthetically attractive part,’ continues the designer, explaining his inspiration behind the collection.

blume, or flower in english, is a result of cutting-edge 3D technology adjusted specifically for the chair’s extrusions

elegance in engineering precision

with the screws concealed from view, the slender aluminum profiles are a result of engineering precision and continuous efforts that become apparent in the 2021 armrest versions.

‘it took the engineers long hours and a lot of experiments to develop and mold the metal extrusion, as well as to perfect the bending technique with the CNC machine.  adding the armrests was a challenge on its own to ensure that the flower profile stays intact when the mold is removed. this is on top of the difficult of attaching the extruded tubes to the frame, seat as well as the backrest, explains sebastian.

resulting in an elegant engineering triumph, blume has also been made stackable, light and to be easily disassembled. with ecological considerations in mind, designer and brand take the responsibility to create a sustainable product.

‘materials are limited and, of course, we need to take into account the product’s life cycle, thus recycling. I think just the fact that pedrali produces everything in-house is amazing as then elements don’t need to be transported from one supplier to another, so the production footprint is also considered. this way of working is certainly very clever, sustainable and efficient,’  says sebastian.

‘in my opinion products should become companions for life,’ says sebastian herkner

regarding the emotional connection between objects and user, sebastian clarifies the importance in investing into a product as one invests on a car or apartment. he continues to explain that in times of uncertainty, particularly during COVID-19, people tend to look for and appreciate quality as well as ways in which a product can be upcycled, re-upholstered or even passed on to a friend or family member.

‘it’s really about cherishing the product and the way that we use it: it can be changed, sold online or given to a friend, or a family member in my opinion, products should become companions for life and for that reuse is crucial. that’s why I see buying furniture as an investment rather than just a one season consume, ’ continues sebastian as he explains how carefully designed products like blume can and should age with the user.

the 2021 armrest version becomes ideal for relaxing living rooms as well as restaurant and lounge settings

‘salone is and has been a very important event for my career, since 2009 when I began my design career.  it’s the ideal place to meet other designers, companies as well as discuss and navigate through different projects. as the biggest furniture design fair, I think it is necessary to attend and support the whole system. saying this, I’m really looking forward to presenting what we created with pedrali, concludes sebastian herkner to designboom ahead of the debut of the expanded blume collection for pedrali.

with ecological considerations in mind, the blume armchair is stackable, light and recyclable

pedrali’s 58 years in a timeline at salone del mobile, 2021

presented in five settings, pedrali’s timeless story unravels even further at salone del mobile, 2021. in a fluid, dynamic narrative, the 58-year story of the all-italian brand is revealed. visitors pass through its collections timeless images, objects and products as if retracing the history and the values of the brand. from office furniture to working from home, and from the hospitality sector to sustainability and the outdoors, the company’s high-end quality furniture fill the exhibition.

patrick jouin’s ila armchair becomes available in solid ash

in addition, patrick jouin’s refined armchair, ila, completes the setting. first debuted in 2020 in two versions, a steel tube frame and a central steel base, the armchair is reconfigured with a four-leg frame in solid ash as the elegant product expresses utmost comfort, personality and protection. on the exterior, the chair’s rigid polyurethane hugs the user in its large volume, while the inner side in flexible polyurethane foam embraces the body perfectly.

care and meticulous attention to detail distinguish the ila armchair that has been designed, right from the onset, to be disassembled. as a result, each component can be disposed correctly at the end of the product’s life cycle, turning the product into an example of sustainable production. with the possibility to completely re-upholster in a variety of finishes, great versatility is also achieved. moreover, the modified accentuated headrest version pleasantly muffles external sounds, creating a cocoon-like, private niche for the sitter.

‘it was like a love story; it was the right place and time to start dreaming and creating magic,’ describes eugeni quitllet on the tale of two chairs, pedrali and the balance of in and outdoor furniture to designboom. the collaboration began with a great harmony between the italian brand’s executive officers, giuseppe and monica pedrali, and the renowned designer, making way for the ‘remind’ and ‘soul’ collections. with the two families of products, eugeni blends past and future together as he fades the boundaries of living spaces. as the outdoors and in integrate – a feeling fortified by the pandemic – balconies, terraces and gardens become part of everyday life.

with products 100% made-in-italy, pedrali continues finding ways to give contemporary and industrial design new meanings. the brand’s long history with traditional craftsmanship keeps evolving through cutting-edge technology, also evident in eugeni quitllet’s outdoor chairs. ‘for both chairs, we focused on the outdoors, technology and, most importantly, in keeping in line with pedrali’s handcraft history,’ says the designer.

the romantic and organic lines of ‘remind’ simplify the concept of bringing the past into the future. the designer re-envisions the traditional monobloc chair with contemporary touches, such as the characterful punched breathable holes on the seat and backrest. the chair sits naturally as an outdoor furniture piece, evoking strong emotions of nostalgia although actually new. this strongly connects to the product’s name – derived from re-cordis meaning passing from the heart.

‘in latin, when you remind yourself of something you reveal some sort of emotion; I love this reference for the chair,’ explains eugeni.

‘products that have an emotional and romantic aspect to them also have a very strong technological support. they are an investment of energy, money, and time so we need to think about a timeless style for longevity. we created this light structure and shape that can resist sun and rain. those little holes are there to let the water and air through,’ remarks the designer.

remind armchairs by eugeni quitllet

from the original to the chair’s customizable ‘pixel’ version, the product is dressed in many meaningful layers. according to eugeni, there is a direct relationship between design and the environment, whether that revolves the materials, the energy put into manufacturing, or even the emotional connection. effectively, the need to be environmentally conscious lies close to the designer’s heart.

‘every industrial project ought to have an ecological dimension to it and the function is another aspect that needs to address the energy and the environment. making a stackable chair for example, means more products in the truck, less petrol for delivery, and less space in the new home,’ clarifies eugeni.

remind chair by eugeni quitllet

taking this eco-friendliness a step further, ‘remind’ is available in the recycled grey version made entirely from recycled plastic. the designer takes upon the challenge to create a product out of people’s post-consumer waste and industrial plastic remains. with its airy appearance, the chair is essentially ‘an organic synthesis of different materials, analysis, and qualifications,’ explains eugeni. the outcome is so special to him as it is a physical representation of the effort that is put into separating waste towards creating another useful object.

‘it is the user that needs to understand the work, what they’re purchasing and at what cost. we can try as much as we can, but it is the client that needs to go that extra step to recycle or to buy the recycled,’ adds the designer as he relates back to the two chairs.

soul outdoor by eugeni quitllet

with the original version made in ashwood and transparent plastic, the ‘soul’ chair merges futuristic, plastic injection technology with the sensitivity of handcrafting. as the sculptural frame holds the almost disappearing seat, the design once again bridges past to future. the outdoors version is created by reversing the technologies, where the contemporary aluminum structure holds a weather-resistant, timber teak seat.

‘there is the need to give an object more uses in order to extend its lifespan. this is what i like about soul; that other than polycarbonate and wood, there is the same effect with aluminum and teak. this way, whether indoor or outdoor, the result is always elegant,’ eugeni expands.

soul outdoor by eugeni quitllet

the circumstances of the pandemic accentuate the change in perception of outside furniture. the pieces were often seen as a relative luxury, but now exterior furnishings are almost a necessity. after many months of lockdown, people look to maximize the potential of outside living spaces, whether that is their high-rise balcony or back garden.

‘nowadays, everyone has recognized the innate human need to be outside. now, our products need to adapt if we take them outside and leave them. there are no more barriers, we have to learn how to live in every situation and the product has to answer to that,’ reveals the designer.

products should be designed to avoid undergoing modifications whenever the situation and needs change. this is one of the many reasons why an environmental conscious is a must when creating, as eugeni mentions. the designer explains how essential it is for other creatives like him to be aware and to understand people’s needs in the present whilst answering to the possibilities of the future. the ‘remind’ and ‘soul’ chairs, originally revealed in 2018, both play an even more important part in the living spaces of today – indoors or outdoors.

‘it’s important to be observant and to create products that respond to the future, although designed today. today’s situation, for example, can change rapidly and suddenly. to be able to achieve this, a designer needs to be active in reality, but also distant from it,’ concludes eugeni quitllet.

]]>
a sustainable revolution has sprung at pedrali as the 100% made in italy manufacturer inaugurates ‘recycled grey’ in their first chairs – the ‘remind’ by eugeni quitllet and the ‘babila XL’ by odo fioravanti. the two are made from 100% recycled plastic. this is in their aim of reducing their impact on the environment – as a brand and for their own customers.

recycled polypropylene used in pedrali’s production process

the push for a more sustainable portfolio is challenged by the need to balance the manufacture of high quality products whilst minimizing the negative environmental impact of the design process. pedrali achieves this with ‘recycled grey’. the new material is made 50% from plastic material post-consumer waste and 50% from plastic material industrial waste. the former comes from products that have been used and duly recycled, such as plastic bottles of food packaging, whereas the latter is part of the brand’s production process where they reintegrate its industrial waste. characterized in a grey hue, the result features high resistance and durability needed for prolonged use, and its antistatic finishes ensure they are easy to clean, maintain and sanitize.

this blend allows us to manufacture high quality green products with excellent mechanical performance. obtaining 50% of this material from post-consumer waste means selecting, sorting and recovering a material that would otherwise be discarded. instead, by conducting precise tests and analyses, we can create the ideal raw material for use in furniture, explains the company’s joint CEO, giuseppe pedrali.

‘remind recycled grey’ chair designed by eugeni quitllet

the ‘remind recycled grey’ chair designed by eugeni quitllet is the first of two pedrali products made from this material. inspired by the soft, sinuous curves of the wooden chairs of 19 century, the romantic design is distinguished with a completely new feel. it is functional, versatile and now more sustainable. its lightweight appearance remains thanks to its dotted seat and backrest. the chair is also still suitable for both outdoor and indoor use.

(above: ‘remind recycled grey’ chair designed by eugeni quitllet)

debuting as part of their new ideas 2020, odo fioravanti creates a ‘recycled grey’ version of the ‘babila XL armchair. the design alternates between the rational, straight lines of its supports and the curves of its large shell. this highlights the link between the artificial world of industrial products and the natural world of the human body. the polypropylene seat, which embraces the sitter in a comforting cocoon, is made from recycled plastic.

the ‘recycled grey’ version of the ‘babila XL armchair by odo fioravanti

the ‘recycled grey babila XL’ pushes pedrali’s statement on sustainable even further. its legs can be made from different materials, such as wood or metal, to add character and style variants as well as deliver improved environment standards. when fitted with wooden legs, the product is 100% green. timber sourced from managed forests in line with strict environmental, social and economic regulations – FSC® C114358 certified in fact – is used.

pedrali wooden furniture elements are made from FSC® C114358 certified timber

last but not least in their ongoing sustainable revolution, pedrali has finished its wooden parts in water-based paints since 2018. up to 40% of raw materials sourced from waste plant substances deliver durability, chemical and light-resistance, and industrial usability. it also ensures a substantial decrease in volatile organic compounds, contained in normal paints, to deliver healthier and less hazardous working environments, less air pollution and reduction in CO2 emissions.

their paint is made from up to 40% of raw materials sourced from waste plant substances

we produce everything in-house, in our production plants at mornico al serio (near bergamo) and at manzano (near udine). this allows us to oversee the entire production process, using the latest-generation machinery and equipment, as well as high quality, sustainable materials, says the company’s joint CEO, monica pedrali.the purpose of the sustainable philosophy that my  brother giuseppe and I are pursuing by converting industrial and post-consumer waste into raw material is to safeguard the planet, in line with the principle of circular economy aimed at eliminating waste.

themes of wellness, comfort and sustainability define pedrali new ideas 2020. the project highlights new furniture products, family extensions and collaborations for both the contract and residential scenes as well as for the indoors and outdoors. at the same time, the pieces continue to deliver and build upon the italian brand’s renowned high quality and aesthetics. one such focus is the introduction of new versions of products made entirely from recycled materials. this includes eugeni quitllet’s remind and odo fioravanti’s babila XL ‘recycled grey’ editions.

pedrali’s new ideas 2020 places these new, highly expressive designs in dream-like surroundings awash with cleanly designed, pastel-palette surfaces. the environments enrich the beauty and vibrant soul of the products as well as helping accentuate the details and materials of their designs.

one of two new collaborations includes the blume chair, lounge armchair and accompanying coffee table sets – all designed by sebastian herkner. guided by craftsmanship, quality and functionality, the designs aim to blend traditional artisan skills with new production technologies. the results distinguish high quality furniture pieces that age with the user over time.

evoking the themes of elegance and sophistication, the designs reveal a soft, rounded and distinctive appearance. this is based upon a flower-shaped profile made from extruded aluminum. the slender frame is combined harmoniously with soft, generous polyurethane foam. all components can be disassembled and disposed of correctly at the end of their life cycle. the set of coffee tables mirror this sophisticated flower shape, and is available in various heights and sizes to make different compositions.

toa by robin rizzini

the second collaboration of pedrali’s new ideas 2020 is the toa table designed by robin rizzini. through detailed research into innovative materials and production processes, the designer’s collection centers on coherence and rationality, where the use of unnecessary materials has been rejected. the result defines a new functional yet expressive product that combines technical-industrial style with decorative details.

lightweight and minimalist, the toa table is characterized by a solid die-cast aluminum frame with a fluid geometric design. large size tops stand above the tapered bridge legs, which are thinner at the base and widen towards the top. its shape expresses strength despite its minimal appearance. a variety of widths, depths and finish options add to the table’s modularity.

toa by robin rizzini

designed by patrick jouin, the ila armchair is a refined piece of furniture that expresses high quality comfort, softness and sensuality. the smooth, taut exterior – made from rigid polyurethane – cocoons the sitter in its large volume. inside, this sense of protection is increased through the flexible polyurethane foam of the inner backrest and seat. this adapts to the human body to envelop the user like a soft embrace. the base is available as either a swivelling cone shape or a four-legged steel tube frame – all with an inclined design that evokes dynamism and lightness.

ila by patrick jouin

the dream-like environments of pedrali new ideas 2020 extends to the outdoors as well. embedded in inspiration from the mediterranean coastline, the panarea armchair and lounge armchair created by CMP Design reflects the colors, feelings and experience of outdoor dining on a sea-facing terrace. its wide and curved backrest is woven in polypropylene cord to create a geometrical pattern that stretches around the tubular steel frame as far as the armrests. this double curved weave delivers comfort whilst also appearing transparent, lightweight yet elegant.

panarea by CMP Design

characterized by soft lines and generous sizes, the reva twist continues upon the collection designed by patrick jouin. the elegant three-seater sofa and lounge armchair features four-tapered legs in die-cast aluminum placed at the extremities of the perimeter frame in extruded aluminum. steel backrest and armrests are webbed together with a flat rope weave made from weather-resistant polypropylene. this expresses a more natural appearance whilst delivering extra comfort through its soft cushioning.

reva twist by patrick jouin

for more relaxing moments outdoors, the new rail sun lounger – designed by pedrali’s in-house design team – reveals simple, modern lines. its slim, powder-coated aluiminum frame is supported by four angled, stainless steel legs that each form an oblique shape. the seat and backrest, which can be adjusted to find your most comfortable position, is upholstered in water-repellent, UV-resistant fabric. the lightweight, stackable design also includes a handy compartment space.

rail by pedrali’s in-house design team

continuing the collection first released in 2018, eugeni quitllet’s remind chair has a sensual and romantic design that draws upon the soft, sinuous curves of the wooden chairs of the late 19th century. the new chair retains the design’s original, harmonious lines but adds a lightweight, airy yet solid appearance. the relatively small, functional and versatile element is made from a monoblock of injection-molded polyporpylene with punched holes throughout its body. this makes it suitable for both outdoor and indoor use. as another new edition for 2020, remind ‘recycled grey’ is a special version made entirely from recycled polypropylene: 50% from post-consumer waste and 50% from industrial waste.

remind by eugeni quitllet

to meet an ever growing need for sustainability, the babila XL adds an environmentally-conscious element to the family designed by odo fioravanti. the original design of the collection has always been poised between tradition and innovation. this is even more so now with a ‘recycled grey’ edition available, which is made from entirely recyclable materials. the design itself envisions an imposing armchair with a polypropylene shell. its greater dimensions deliver even better seating comfort, which is bolstered further with the removable and easy-to-clean lining.

babila XL by odo fioravanti

previewed at maison et objet 2020, the soft soul by eugeni quitllet is a special version of the armchair first designed in 2018. in the same silhouette of the original, the chair’s curved solid ash wood frame and polycarbonate shell now features a padded and upholstered seat made from genuine leather or fabric. this adds an extra touch of comfort to its equally as strikingly visual appeal.

it’s 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic has most of the world under lockdown. humanity, limited to stay inside, is starting to creatively adapt to this new reality supported by technology. isolation may have (or not) a role in this creative process, but to catalan designer eugeni quitllet, this new panorama has him feeling like robinson crusoe. known for his incredible aesthetics summarized in a combination of digital precision and flowing curves, the disoñador — a spanish contraction of designer (diseñador) and dreamer (soñador) — has created the wild chair, a seating object that images a chair left out in the wild.

while in isolation, eugeni quitllet began to think what would happen if he left one of his designs out in the wild, with no human intervention. his imagination began to wonder, seeing how the piece would be claimed by ivy, taking over it and creating a new structure. ‘I’m seeing at this moment how nature is taking its place back everywhere, in the sea, in the air, in the ground, in the city… and now in design! and why not… we will grow chairs like vegetables and modify seeds genetically to grow new designs.’

called wild, quitllet presents a chair that only exists in its 3D virtuality, opening a door to the new era that is starting. the chair, with its organic curves, invites us to think about tomorrow and a greener future.
