Rubix Square: An Interactive Urban Landscape of Play and Light

Rubix Square is a public space intervention designed by Shanghai-based studio 100architects, located in a residential district in Fuzhou, China. The project integrates geometric structures, sport-oriented installations, and lighting design to generate a continuous user experience that shifts between daytime activity and nighttime illumination. At the center of the space is a three-story structure modeled after the Rubik’s Cube. This element is reinterpreted as an occupiable volume, allowing for circulation through stairs, platforms, and surfaces that support climbing and movement. The structure provides a spatial focal point and serves as a vertical play installation.

The surrounding components include four additional installations, each associated with specific recreational functions. The Hashtag is a ground-level grid containing swings, slides, and lighting elements. Basket Triangle repositions basketball hoops at varying heights and angles, introducing alternative play configurations. Wall Ball functions as a football-inspired target wall with holes of graduated difficulty, promoting different levels of interaction. Heli-Skate offers a mini skate zone intended for balance-based activities, particularly for younger users. These structures are organized within a unified ground plane composed of painted concrete, stone paving, and EPDM rubber surfacing. The ground treatment incorporates geometric motifs, like grids, arcs, and color blocks, to visually tie together the various elements. Additional components, such as square planters and integrated wooden benches, provide moments of rest and shade, enhancing user comfort.

100architects’ Rubix Square Introduces Layered Spatial Layout

Lighting plays a significant role in the transformation of the space after sunset. The design team at 100architects embeds fixtures to highlight the geometric contours of each installation, emphasizing their form and creating a layered visual environment. The central Rubik’s Cube structure is internally lit, with its facades illuminated by shapes such as circles, triangles, and crosses. The Hashtag structure functions as a neon light maze, while the other installations are outlined in accent lighting that maintains visibility and reinforces their spatial identity. Basket Triangle and Wall Ball are subtly highlighted to accentuate their sculptural forms, while Heli-Skate pulses with cool tones embedded in its curves, like light traces frozen in motion.

From an aerial perspective, the site reads as a luminous grid system, while at ground level, the arrangement creates an immersive environment for physical engagement and visual exploration. Rubix Square combines elements of play, urban design, and lighting strategy to support a dynamic 24-hour program of use within the public realm.

Wired Scape urban playground emerges as a surreal forest

Wired Scape is a public playscape located within a residential district in Guangzhou, China, designed by 100architects. The project integrates sculptural forms and fluid geometries to create an interactive landscape influenced by natural elements such as forests and rivers.

The design concept abstracts two key environmental features, Forest and Flowing Water, into geometric structures and surface patterns. Central to the playscape are four structural elements shaped like trees, composed of spiraling steel pipes. These structures function as both vertical climbing features and shaded canopies. They are interconnected by suspended bridges that allow movement between different levels. The surface treatment of the playscape includes multicolored, curved lines resembling the motion of water. These lines define various functional areas across the site, including plazas, circulation paths, seating zones, and play platforms. A recessed plaza in front of the central structures provides a flexible space for small gatherings, performances, or informal rest.

Spiraling geometries form 100architects’ sculptural playscape

The design team at 100architects conceives Wired Scape as a multi-generational space. Play equipment is integrated throughout the landscape, supporting a range of physical and cognitive activities, including climbing, swinging, sliding, and balancing. Seating areas are strategically placed to allow passive supervision and engagement by caregivers. The spatial layout also accommodates social interaction among different age groups.

Materials such as steel piping and resilient surfacing are used to define the primary forms and ensure durability. Additional features include sculptural benches, swings, seesaws, a round ping-pong table, and merry-go-rounds. The layout includes shaded areas and multiple access points to support year-round usability and accessibility. Lighting is embedded throughout the playscape, highlighting structural outlines and circulation routes after dark. These lighting elements allow the space to be used during evening hours and contribute to its visual identity at night. Overall, the project presents an interpretation of natural forms through abstract, built geometries. It emphasizes spatial continuity, varied user engagement, and integration with the surrounding urban context.

100architects activates uae beach corniche

Along the stretch of the Beach Corniche in the UAE, 100architects positions Winding Breeze — a conceptual bustling community hub for both the local community and tourists of the emirates. The project proposes a system of vibrant elevated pathways, looping across the corniche to contain pocketed plazas hosting a range of leisure amenities. Wound within are entertainment spaces, sports and play areas, beach facilities and restaurants and cafes that enliven the coastline. A new trendy outdoor lifestyle hub, Winding Breeze’s cluster of high-quality entertainment activities aims to enhance visitors’ experience in the public realm, providing a place to reconnect with nature and the community. The architects intend for the hub to become an urban landmark not only in the UAE, but also beyond.

swirling pathways pocket vibrant entertainment plazas

Aiming to build a new urban landmark in the UAE, the Shanghai-based firm brings together a series of a vibrant outdoor lifestyle facilities positioned along the idyllic coastline, forming relaxing and enlivened spaces where visitors can reconnect with nature and the community. In a sweeping abstract expression of the wind, Winding Breeze takes form as vibrant, swirling, elevated pedestrian paths. Creating a microclimate underneath, the resulting plazas host a shaded park and a beach skywalk that offers panoramic views across both the beach and city. The complex also facilitates a pedestrian connection to the urban settlement across the road that is currently separated from the coast.

‘The conceptual proposal intends a bold architecturalization of that unique feeling of the sea breeze caressing the skin when arriving at a bespoke tourist destination on holiday’, comments 100architects. The elevated ‘breeze loops’ of Winding Breeze spiral along the beach and disrupt the expansive rectilinear promenade into smaller human-scale sections. Formed by these revolving paths are a series of ‘pocket plazas’, each hosting specific functions and features that encourage dynamics of social interaction through leisure and play, encouraging visitors to slow down and indulge in memorable experiences. Allocated within the contained plaza platforms are leisure spaces, lush nature, and a wide variety of sport facilities, accompanied by a shaded retail and dining area as an architectural buffer to the busy road behind.

In response to the client’s initiative to activate a large portion of the newly inaugurated UAE Beach Corniche to attract both local and international visitors, 100architects’ concept proposes a new urban landmark not only in the UAE but also beyond. The intervention enhances and stimulates, both visually and functionally, the experience of visitors in all senses, turning this section of the emirates’ coastline into one of the main catalyzers of social life in the emirate.

stripes of color animate leisure and play

taking advantage of the arch-shaped rooftop, the design team at 100architects utilized parallel stripes of color, forming a rainbow. each of the lines represented in a different color acts as a platform hosting specific functions and features that encourage social interactions through leisure and play. those stripes initially executed as 2D floor graphics for circulation, in certain moments become 3D shapes forming urban furniture, play structures, and objects for leisure.

the whole system of stripes becomes 3-dimensional, elevating from the ground level in order to create a social amphitheater with sweeping views opening towards the xiang river. furthermore, vertical walls with geometrical shapes and patterns quickly grab the attention of visitors, becoming trendy selfie spots for social media sharing. the social amphitheater is crowned with a pop-up logo of ‘I ♡ 长沙’, as the main recognizable and distinctive IP image of the rooftop.100architects invites you over the rainbow 5

to culminate the fun on the rooftop, 100architects included a 12-meters-high spiral slide going down from the rooftop on the 6th floor to the terrace on the 5th floor. altogether, the rooftop intervention enhances and stimulates the experience of visitors in all senses, and creates successfully a very colorful and stimulating community hub for kaifu district right on the top of changsha beichen delta joy city shopping mall.

100architects has introduced ‘high loop’, an urban intervention proposal for the renovation of puji road pedestrian bridge in shanghai. the iconic bridge was built over the suzhou creek in 1997, connecting the the jing’an and zhabei district. in 2009, it was renovated to allow additional access to small vehicles, such bikes and scooters, improving the urban connectivity.

100architects transform a pedestrian bridge into an eventful elevated promenade 1

all images courtesy of 100architects

the bridge extends over a kilometer in length as an elevated platform offering striking views from one of the most representative areas of the city. however, it is currently underestimated when compared to other bridges, hiding its uniqueness and amazing potential to become a local urban landmark. therefore, the proposal by 100architects aims to transform the bridge into an eventful elevated park crossing the city, allowing passers-by to experience a unique journey through one of the densest areas of shanghai.

100architects transform a pedestrian bridge into an eventful elevated promenade 2

the grey asphalt gives way to bold and bright colors, turning the bridge into an eye-catching elevated promenade. the design strategy of the ‘high loop’ organizes the different circulations by colors, creating a hierarchy of different rhythms and paces in which the bridge can be transited. while a straight lane in electric lime color defines the fast track for bicycles and motorbikes, a winding path in viscous magenta was purposely introduced to slow down the pedestrian circulation. a contrasting loop that encourages pedestrians to take it slow, enjoy the journey and the privileged views over shanghai’s urban landscape and the suzhou creek.

as a background color, a soothing cyan blue defines the spaces where one can stop & stay, meet with others and socialize. from viewing decks to picnic plazas, lounge areas or mini amphitheaters, it’s in these cyan blue pockets where all the contrasting yellow urban furniture are placed and where social functions unfold. in addition, new greenery planters are introduced, either as decorative elements or as functional separators of the motored track and the pedestrian path.

100architects transform a pedestrian bridge into an eventful elevated promenade 3

besides those functions, some of the cyan blue patches have been purposely left empty in order to leave flexible areas, allowing the occurrence of informal pop-up night markets and other vendors. the new design does not change the current structure, but rather transforms it by only adding a colorful painted scape and functional urban objects on top. in this way, both the circulation system and the functionality of the bridge  are improved.

the chain effect is a public space intervention within the framework of shanghai’s urban design festival hosted in 2017, and powered by MINI china through its urban matters platform, which curates and creates design solutions that tackle urban challenges confronting china’s creative class. the ‘modern urban issue’ tackled by the collaborative duet anomaly + 100architects was to improve the pedestrian circulation in old neighborhoods of the city, where sidewalks are narrow and usually massively occupied by bicycles and scooters parked on them, and where zebra crossings are congested with people.

architects design shanghai road graphics for pedestrians, motorcycles and bikes designboom
concept idea 1

the first issue tackled was the bicycle parking congestion due to the proliferation of bicycles from the booming bike-sharing companies, which has created a new problem in the narrow sidewalks of the city, hindering the circulation of pedestrians. the proposal was not only intended to organize and improve the way these bikes are parked on the streets, but also raise awareness and educate the users on civic behavior regarding the public use of these shared bikes. inspired by the chain of a bicycle, the architects came up with a simple yet creative graphic that would indicate for the users the positions to park the bikes and also suggest in which angle they should be parked, optimizing the accommodation of more bikes in certain areas and freeing up to 0,5 meters of sidewalk for a more comfortable pedestrian circulation.

bicycle parking graphic along yuyuan road, shanghai

the second issue solved was the motorbike parking congestion due to a rising proliferation of food and online shopping delivery companies. for this,  another simple graphic was designed, inspired by the commonly yet unbelievably packed delivery motorbike drivers usually spotted in the streets of shanghai. the stacked boxes have become the parking slots for the delivery drivers to park their motorbikes in a specific location and in an organized manner.

the third and last issue was the overcrowded zebra crossings in narrow streets, which in peak rush hours are very difficult to cross without bumping into other people crossing in the opposite direction. to help organize the pedestrian circulation over those zebra crossings, the team came up with a very simple yet extremely effective modification of the crossing’s white lines themselves, from straight to zig-zag lines, which created a pointing arrow shape, giving pedestrians a directional hint, splitting the circulation in two directions in order to avoid bumping into other people. these simple yet smart designs were awarded red dot design award 2018 in the category of environmental graphics.

the red planet is a public space intervention designed by 100architects to foster interactions, attract customers and enhance the experience in the privately-owned public space within an open-air retail street. located in one of the biggest shopping centers in shanghai, the installation is an unusual playground with organized spaces for both kids and adults.

‘our proposal arose from a surreal approach, from the intention of breaking the conventional rules of perception, of what is already conceived as reality, in order to trigger kids’ imagination and creativity as well as immersing them in a colorful experience,’ explains 100architects’ team. the red planet features a bubbling basketball field which serves as a surreal playground, providing an artificial topography for playing, climbing, sliding, sitting, laying, and many other tricks out of the kids’ own imagination of how to colonize and use the space in ways we did not even imagine at first.

to enhance the narrative of the environment, a bent basketball basket was introduced, with led lights to illuminate the area. other features such as a racing track defining the border of the installation, chalkboard pyramids, benches for parents and other random games, complemented the range of fun activities that kids and adults are able to undertake. the monochromatic treatment with shades of red was also applied on top of existing urban furniture and decorative elements from the place, aiming to generate a more immersive experience onto the surreal ‘red planet’.

product designer diego fuertes in collaboration with 100architects were commissioned by club med to design their new office space in shanghai. the french company was moving its asia-pacific headquarter to the recently completed bund financial center, at the bund, designed by foster + partners and heatherwick studio. club med is specializes in the market of all-inclusive holidays with many vacation villages and resorts in the most exotic and breathtaking destinations around the world.

fuertes as well as 100architects state that club med is an unconventional company, and their office should reflect extravagancy, presenting themselves as a young and fresh company. while brainstorming the initial concept, the first thought in which the designers all agreed upon was to design an office that inspires vacations, holidays, and reflects the happiness that one feels when arriving to a new sunny destination at the sea. although the scope of work included the design of the entire office, club med specifically requested to have special accents in the two main areas: the signature lobby, which would be the space in charge of offering a good first impression to clients and visitors alike; and the pantry, which is a social space for employees, rather than just a pantry to have coffee or breakfast.

the lobby is a space that welcomes visitors into the club med headquarters

additionally, informal gatherings and team building activities were intended to take place in the social pantry. the lobby, however, was conceptualized to mimic the feel of a swimming pool, in which visitors would be submerged under water. to create this illusion, a deep blue elevated pipe is designed to be hanging overhead, looping around the lobby defining different mini-areas within the lobby. the shape of the pipe projects onto the floor in order to enhance the virtual subdivision of the space, having two different materials on both sides of the projected pipe: blue PVC carpet as the pool water, and PVC wood flooring as the deck around the pool. the result is a multifunctional space in which each loop offers a mini-function, such as a reception desk, meeting room, waiting area, informal meeting spaces, hanging phone booths among others.

the subtle partitions serve as mini-functions within the office

as main features, a long yellow kitchen is designed to solve all the practical needs of cooking, storing and coffee making in the same space. a wooden mini-amphitheater is located at the end of the space in order to provide enough seating areas for hosting communal activities or public speeches. the working areas feature an open office typology in order to foster relationships among employees and directors. functionally efficient, working spaces count not only with long communal working tables, but also with private offices with glass partitions, enhancing transparency and bringing natural light to all corners.
